Message The main issue I have with biofuels is that you don't recoup any energy in using them. Ignoring the need to commit large areas to grow the crop, there is the growing process itself. It requires alot of energy in the form of fuels to run the machinery to till the land and harvest the crops. Even if technology advances to the point where the energy expended in the oil and gas drilling process is on par with the harvesting process, you still have the problem that you're 'growing' energy. At the end of the day the energy has to come from somewhere. Plants get their energy from the ground through a photosynthesis process. Oil and natural gas come from decay processes of organic material that has laid dormant for millions of years. Biofuels are simply borrowing from Peter to pay Paul scenario. The only real solution is to 'reduce' energy consumption while eliminating frivolous uses of oil (e.g. plastic bottles).
